At the same time it was located at a crossing of the two historical main roads that used to run across Föhr in a north-south direction. The name "Midlum" is first recorded in 1462. Even today there is a tradition in Midlum to go out to the sea dike in spring and cook a meal. This habit dates back to a time when the sheep of the village where driven out there to spend the summer under a shepherd's guidance.
